The Association of Vision Science Librarians (AVSL) is an international organization composed of professional librarians, or persons acting in that capacity, whose collections and services include the literature of vision. Current members are individuals who work within libraries that serve educational institutions, eye clinics and hospitals, and private companies with an interest in eye or vision-related products and services.
The Association is a special interest group of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) and a caucus of the Medical Library Association (MLA).
The Vision Science Caucus maintains several lists of resources for librarians, ophthalmologists, optometrists, vision scientists, and the public, many of which are open access. The full collection of resource lists is available here. Selected resources include the following:
- Opening Day List - A compilation of recommended books and journals for a vision science collection.
- Vetted List of Vision Science Journals - The journals on this list have been evaluated with a series of standards and criteria by a group of reviewers who are librarians working with vision science collections. Winner of the 2020 Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Collection Development in the Health Sciences.
- Eye Resources on the Internet List - A curated list of materials online relating to the eye and vision science.
- Open Access eBooks List - A curated collection of open access eBooks relating to the eye and vision science.
