Title: Systematic Review Librarian

Brief description of responsibilities:

I work with faculty and staff across campus on systematic reviews, training for reviews, and helping students undertaking their own reviews.

Why is MLA important to you?

As someone fairly new to systematic reviews, I would be lost without MLA training and the valuable connections, including an amazing mentor.

Why did you become a librarian?

My goal was to pursue a PhD in history but I quickly realized that getting a teaching gig at a university would be an uphill road. I discovered librarianship was the way to combine my scholarly interests and abilities into a full time and rewarding career. That career has taken me places I would have never otherwise seen if I had not become a librarian.

What was your first library job or first professional position?

I was Serials & Acquisitions Librarian, also serving as the liaison librarian to Agricultural studies at SUNY Cobleskill.

What is your advice to someone taking on a new role in leadership in MLA or in some other capacity?

Before jumping in feet first, listen and learn. Be open minded and have the strength to admit mistakes and correct them.

What has been the most interesting project you have worked on?

I was part of team working on a Covid-19 review. Not only did it help me channel my anxiety about the virus into meaningful work, it was also part of a groundbreaking body of research.

What do you consider to be the most pressing issues or trends in librarianship?

As Covid-19 has shown us, we have a long way to go in teaching people to wise and discerning consumers of information.

Bucket list:

To visit England and Germany. I'd especially like to see museums and battlefields.

What do you do in your spare time?

Read...I read a lot of Queen Victoria and her fascinating family as well as WWI and WWII history. I also enjoy camping, cooking, sipping a really good beer.

Is there anything about you that others might be surprised to know?

I love Norwegian Black Metal.....it's an acquired taste ;-)
