Health Sciences Librarian

Ebling Library at UW-Madison is seeking a Health Sciences Librarian to provide a range of library services to the UW-Madison health education, research, and clinical communities of Wisconsin. This position:

  • Includes liaison responsibilities (primary library contact) to Global and Population/Public Health as well as other designated units.
  • Develops and delivers in-person and virtual instruction in one-on-one consultations, group settings, and within courses, as well as provides expert research services including literature searches to faculty, students, staff and affiliated clinicians.
  • Will be a member of Ebling Library's Reference and Instruction team, providing support to health sciences students, faculty, and researchers; the Clinical Sciences team, supporting the clinical staff at UW Hospital and Clinics; and the Systematic Review team, supporting health science-related evidence synthesis projects at UW-Madison.

Ebling Library for the Health Sciences is the health sciences library of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The library serves the UW-Madison health sciences faculty, staff, and students, UW Health staff, community health professionals and Wisconsin residents. We are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Health Sciences Learning Center (HSLC) at 750 Highland Avenue, Madison, WI 53705, adjacent to the UW Hospital and the Wisconsin Institutes of Medical Research.

Position Responsibilities

Provides a wide variety of the most advanced professional library services which may include teaching, learning, public services, circulation, assessment, reference, selection, and outreach to support creative exploration, intellectual growth, and scholarly pursuits. Serves as a resource to others and regularly solves complex problems based on advanced knowledge and expertise. Initiates process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations.

  • 25% Serves as a liaison to academic disciplines and/or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services
  • 5% Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with donors, collectors, vendors, and professional colleagues
  • 15% Obtains materials, resolves issues, and answers questions that are complex and highly specialized in nature
  • 10% Designs, develops, delivers, and assesses instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons
  • 25% Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area
  • 5% Develops or coordinates specialized projects or programs
  • 5% Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff outside of their unit on a regular basis
  • 5% Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences
  • 5% Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state and national levels

Tasks:

  • Serves as a liaison to Global and Population/Public Health within the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
  • Creates and updates online tutorials and LibGuides to support students, residents, hospital staff, and faculty in designated areas of responsibility.
  • Provides reference and research consultations for health sciences students, faculty, and researchers in collaboration with Ebling's Reference and Instruction team.
  • Provides reference, instruction, and search services to the clinical staff at UW Hospital and Clinics in collaboration with Ebling's Clinical Sciences team.
  • Works collaboratively with clinical and research teams to conduct systematic reviews and other high-level reviews for dissemination and publication.
  • Via the Systematic Review team. assists in developing a standardized approach for evidence synthesis services for UW-Madison SMPH faculty and researchers, including development of policies and procedures for the management of the services and developing training and education on the systematic review process for Ebling patrons.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • Two years professional experience in a health science library or health/medical work environment.
  • Experience performing in-depth literature searches using biomedical and health sciences databases (e.g., PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase).
  • Experience designing and delivering library instruction including both in-person and virtual classes

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities/Competencies

  • Ability to work independently with initiative.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituencies in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
  • Strong commitment to user services and improving the user experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication as well as listening and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Science, or equivalent degree.
  • Coursework or demonstrated experience in public health or global health.
  • Proficiency with LibGuides or other tools for developing online research guides.
  • Knowledge of the systematic review processes and searching requirements.

 

Salary Information: $65,200 minimum
