BANGLADESH SISTER LIBRARY CEREMONY & NEWS

Hello ICS members,

I’m thrilled to share information and photos of a Sister Library ceremony which took place on April 13th in Bangladesh.  The sister libraries are:

  • Bangladesh Health Professions Institute / Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed Library in Savar, Bangladesh
  • Bracken Health Sciences Library at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Our thanks go to Kathy Kwan and Jie Li for arranging the Sister Libraries designation.  The attached document includes additional photos and details about the e-library and Sister Libraries partnership. We were stunned to see the Sister Libraries certificate rendered in marble when we arrived!

CRP Librarian Mosammat Mohesana, Suzanne Maranda (Head, Bracken Library) and I provided instruction to 134 faculty, clinicians and students on the HINARI terms of use and resources such as CINAHL, Summon, PubMed full text, Cochrane and Essential Evidence Plus.  Learners also were introduced to the new online catalogue and institutional repository.  The e-library is possible due to Springshare’s donation of a LibGuides site license:http://crplibrary.libguides.com/home.

For more information on the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed, see http://www.crp-bangladesh.org/.  The Centre is located 1.2 kilometres from the site of the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse; most of the victims were transported to the CRP for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Transportation and accommodation and project support were provided under the auspices of Queen’s University’s International Centre for the Advancement of Community-Based Rehabilitation, with funding from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.

In addition to continued development of the allied health library, attention will now turn to creating an inviting and accessible library with a thoughtfully planned collection (in English and Bangla) for the Centre’s Inclusive School.

I won’t be attending the MLA Chicago conference but look forward to meeting fellow ICSers in Austin next May.
