An experience at Bracken Health Science Library - forth week

Time flies! It's the last week of my visit in Bracken and also a short week (Monday was the Thanksgiving Holiday in Canada). This week at Stauffer Library, I did another presentation to introduce my library to other Queen’s librarians and compared the differences in education of librarians between Canada and Taiwan.

I joined a staff meeting about the current copyright matters on Wednesday. Canada Parliament is going to review their Copyright Act to possibly amend the fair dealing for educational institutions in 2017. Some publishers’ organizations hope to eliminate or narrow fair dealing and academic communities have begun to do some preparations for this matter.

Bracken’s Librarians introduced me to how they give marks for students’ assignments. In some courses, faculty asks their students to attend the library’s searching classes and finish librarians’ assignments. For one second year nursing assignment, it is 5% of their total score in the course and librarians will give marks and comments for assignments.

I followed another class for second year students in the school of medicine on the last day. The topic of this class is critical enquiry search strategy, teaching students how to do a literature search step by step. Students have to finish an assignment and make an appointment with a librarian.

This visit gave me a fabulous and impressive experience in library services. All Bracken’s librarians are very hospitable and easy to get along! Thanks MLA/ICS and Queen’s University Library for offering this visiting opportunity and I hope more librarians join the international visiting program!
