The academy recognizes exemplary professional performance throughout a health sciences librarian’s career. Academy membership is awarded to health information professionals who have distinguished themselves in important areas of the 6 professional competency areas and through continuing education, job experience, and leadership in the profession.
Member Level: Applicants applying for the AHIP member level for the first time must have five years of professional experience in the information field following the master’s degree and must submit 50 points in professional accomplishments in the last five years.
Senior Level: Applicants applying for the AHIP senior level for the first time must have five years of professional experience in the information field following the master’s degree and must submit 80 points in professional accomplishments in the last five years. Of these, no more than 50 points may be sponsored instruction. At least 5 of the 80 professional accomplishment points must be from professional organization activities–not necessarily MLA.
Distinguished Level: Applicants applying for the AHIP distinguished level for the first time must have ten years of professional experience in the information field following the master’s degree and must submit 120 points in professional accomplishments in the last five years. Of these, no more than 50 points may be sponsored instruction. At least 10 of the 120 professional accomplishment points must be from professional organization activities–and 5 of those MUST be from MLA activities.
Member, Senior, Distinguished Same Level Renewal: you only need submit your AHIP Points, showing 50 points of health sciences-related professional accomplishments in the last five years. Please note: professional association requirements still apply for renewals. For Senior level, of the 50 professional accomplishment points, 5 must be from professional organization activities–not necessarily MLA; for Distinguished level, 10 points must be from professional organization activities–5 of which must be from MLA activity.
