Qualifications for MLA Fellowship

[Nominators are directed in this Section to provide comments or descriptions of the qualifications of the nominee in response to a series of prompts that reference professional areas of accomplishment.  The prompts suggest what constitutes minimum qualifications for Fellowship consideration, but they do not suggest a required source of evidence.  For this Section, nominators are strongly encouraged to rely on the nominee’s curriculum vitae as the most reliable “source of truth.”  Note that for most employers, a curriculum vita is considered both a private and a factually accurate document, and falsification can be considered terms for disciplinary action even leading to dismissal.  It is therefore considered a bona fide source of evidence for the purposes of a MLA award nomination.  In this Section, evidence drawn from letters of support for the nomination may also provide relevant data; letters, however, are ipso facto a lesser form of evidence as they are not subject to the same accuracy expectations.

Ms. Shipman began holding leadership positions at the national level on behalf of MLA starting in 1992, when she served as Chair of the Ida and George Eliot Prize Jury.  Since that time, she has held at least seven (7) elected or appointed leadership positions, including but not limited to the following:

• OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS: Nominee’s outstanding achievements as evidenced by a highly significant contribution to the goals of the association in a relatively short period of time; or durable achievement by a sustained level of commitment to the goals of the association over a long period of time.

Ms. Shipman launched her professional career in 1980 with an entry-level position at the Welch Medical Library, Johns Hopkins University.  In 1981 she joined the Maryland Association of Health Sciences Librarians and since that time has been robustly active in service to the health sciences librarianship community of practice, holding at least 80 committee or taskforce appointments.  Over a career spanning at least 35 years, Ms. Shipman has proven to be a remarkably effective advocate on behalf of MLA’s membership, as evinced by her elections to the MLA Board of Directors and the Presidency.  Her ability to appreciate, understand and articulate nuance is evinced by the leadership she has provided in the realm of scholarly communications, wherein she chaired the AAHSL Scholarly Communications Committee, helped to develop the Chicago Collaborative as an AAHSL representative and now as the Society for Scholarly Publishing representative and served with distinction on the Society for Scholarly Publishing Board of Directors and the New England Journal of Medicine Library Advisory Board, among other groups working in this critical field.

However, when considering the arc of her career and sustained, significant achievement, one must recognize that first and foremost Ms. Shipman has been an innovator.  Whether it’s in the realm of management to mission through the application of Toyota LEAN processes to librarianship [Shipman, et al. Provider documentation of patient education: a Lean investigation,” JMLA 104(2):154-6, 2016], collaboration with academic partners in the fields of gaming, makerspace uses and medical device prototyping [Casucci T, Shipman, et al. “Convergence and collaboration: partnering with medical therapeutic device and apps innovation,” poster presented at the Midcontinental Chapter, MLA Quint Essential Meeting, 2014], or the sometimes startling reinvention of library spaces [Casucci T, Gregory JM, LeBer JM, Shipman J et al. “Space challenges: collaborations and collisions create change,” Public Services Quarterly 11(2):163-70, 2015], Ms. Shipman has evinced what it means to grow, evolve, learn and leverage one’s bona fides to change the nature of health sciences librarianship.  By what evidence can such a claim be made?  Ms. Shipman has competed for the opportunity, or been invited, to give well over 100 presentations since the start of her professional career, delivering papers and posters at MLA annual and chapter meetings but also presenting at venues as diverse as: Society for Scholarly Publishing’s Annual Meetings; the Teaching and Learning in New Library Spaces: The Changing Landscape of Health Sciences Libraries Conference; VentureWell Open Conferences; in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the MedInfo ’15 meeting; at Salt Lake Comic Con; on behalf of the USACO Corporation in Japan; and even at grand rounds for a hospital in Dublin, Ireland.  Such opportunities only come with reputation and recognition for excellence. • SIGNIFICANT SCHOLARSHIP:  Nominee’s significant scholarship as evidenced by publication of one or more refereed publications in the area of health sciences librarianship; teaching or development of a course over a sufficient period of time for professional recognition of subject expertise; or research documented by grant funding, publication or invited presentation of a paper.

Ms. Shipman hap published nearly 30 invited or referred journal articles, 14 for MLA publications (JMLA, the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association, and book chapters).  She has delivered nearly 50 posters at MLA annual or Chapter meetings. She is co-editing an MLA book on the topic of Innovation and Information which will be released in 2017, and is in the process of co-editing a second book dealing with Health Sciences Libraries collaborations. • The late Judith G. Robinson, former Assistant Dean for Library and Learning Resources, Eastern Virginia Medical School, wrote of Ms. Shipman in her JMLA president profile, “Colleagues, friends, and family know Jean as hard working, ethical, enthusiastic, and committed to solving problems and ensuring that her visions become realities.”

• Faith Meakin, FMLA, wrote of Ms. Shipman, “Jean is an extraordinary individual. She has an          unbelievable capacity for work and is both practical and creative. Jean demonstrates the highest         level of dependability and drive. She knows what needs to be done and does it well. She also            demonstrates great flexibility in being able to shift gears easily between assignment and            activities. A very good quality to have in an MLA president.”

• Debra Ketchell, AHIP, writing as deputy director of the Health Sciences Libraries, University of Washington, noted that, “Jean looks at libraries as a business with clients, managing services for maximum advantage…. When you first meet Jean, you think “here’s a gentle, quiet person” but in fact she is solid steel. For example, I’ve seen her get exactly what library clients wanted through determination, persistence, and enthusiasm for the negotiation.

• In 2006, John E. Ulmschneider, university librarian at Virginia Commonwealth University                Libraries, where Ms. Shipman worked from 2000 to 2008, wrote of Ms. Shipman: “She is a                vision-driven leader who pursues her vision with unrelenting creativity and the deepest type of     commitment. She is indefatigable in her dedication to the vision. When you meet Jean, you see   a sweet, nice person who is careful and attentive to others. Her wonderful warmth does not                stand in the way of her  determination to reach a goal.”
