Title: Research and Instruction Librarian
Brief description of responsibilities:
I am the liaison librarian to the School of Allied Health Professions and the School of Public Health. I spend the majority of my time helping students construct searches and learn to use EndNote. I also work on providing information literacy learning modules through our LMS.
Why is MLA important to you?
This is my first job as a medical sciences librarian, and MLA has been essential in helping me to learn more about the specifics of health librarianship. I value the community and how quick to help and answer questions everyone is.
Why did you become a librarian?
I am constantly curious about EVERYTHING and librarianship seemed like a good way to learn about lots of different topics. I love helping students with research questions in content areas that I didn’t even know existed! I am also concerned about how many people are unable to discern between good sources and poor sources, and it is important to me to find ways to help.
What was your first library job or professional position?
I worked as a student in my college library – I already knew I wanted to become a librarian, so the librarians took me under their wing and gave me projects and opportunities that weren’t normally given to student workers. I loved it! It really cemented my plan to become a librarian.
What has been the most interesting project you have worked on?
Oddly enough, I am someone that really likes working on policy documents. My first professional position was actually as an archivist for a liberal arts university that was attempting to transform a historical society into an archive. I loved working on the policy documents required to make this change.
What is something you have on your “bucket list”?
In one calendar year, I want to spend July 1 (Canada Day) in Ottawa, July 4 (Independence Day) in Washington, D.C., and July 14 (Bastille Day) in Paris. I think it would be so much fun to experience all three of these holidays in the capital of the country they celebrate!
What do you do in your spare time, for fun, or to relax?
Travel! I have been to China, most of Western Europe, Mexico, and quite a bit of the U.S., including both Alaska and Hawaii. I have so many more places I want to see!
Describe yourself in five words:
Curious, enthusiastic, passionate, and scatterbrained but organized!
