Teaching with GenAI: Practical Strategies for Health Sciences Librarians

Scheduled: Wednesday, July 29, 2026, 1:00pm–2:30pm, Central Time

Generative AI is rapidly transforming research, teaching, and learning across the health sciences, and educators are reaching out to librarians to guide students. This webinar will help librarians feel confident in incorporating GenAI topics into their teaching. Topics will include ethical and responsible use (including copyright and bias), applications for evidence-based practice, commonly used AI tools for literature searching, and strategies for staying current with AI developments in liaison disciplines. Participants will leave with actionable approaches and instructional ideas to help their communities navigate this evolving landscape.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Outline instructional approaches for incorporating GenAI into health sciences teaching
  • Select teaching strategies for incorporating generative AI into library instruction, both as stand-alone modules and embedded content
  • Implement strategies for staying informed about emerging GenAI trends and tools within their liaison areas

Audience

This webinar would be of interest to Health Sciences Librarians who are interested in incorporating GenAI into their instruction sessions, whether as one of many topics, or as an entire GenAI workshop. We would expect both librarians who have not yet added GenAI as a class topic and those who have begun to do so but are looking for ideas on integrating GenAI to be interested.

Presenters:

Karen Grigg, MLIS, AHIP, is the Health Sciences Librarian for Collections and Instruction at the University of North Carolina Library. Her liaison duties include Gillings School of Global Public Health and the Radiology Department.  She also is HSL’s primary contact for accessibility issues, takes part in and leads Collections projects, participates in Community Outreach activities, and has provided instruction on using GenAI for research. Previously, she was the Science Liaison Librarian at UNC Greensboro, the Collection Services Librarian at Duke University Medical Center Library, and Subject Specialist for Life Sciences, Textiles, and Engineering at North Carolina State University Libraries. She has a strong interest in ethical, responsible, and creative use of AI and AI tools.

Jamie Conklin, MLIS, is a Health Sciences Librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and liaison to the School of Nursing and the Department of Psychiatry. She teaches and consults with students, faculty, staff, and clinicians on research and evidence-based patient care. Jamie also helps design and deliver generative AI instruction for the Library’s AI Studio. She is interested in how AI can support learning, research, and equitable access to information.
