This class presents essential core readings in research data management alongside interactive online learning modules, a list of tools in this area, a guide to writing data management plans, and other resources. The sections of this class are: (1) What is data management, and why is it important? (2) Developing data management skills (3) Writing data management plans. There is also a list of additional related resources. Learners can expect to complete knowledge check quizzes for each section, and an assignment for reviewing a data management plan.

Audience
This class is designed for newcomers to data services. A basic familiarity with data services terms and concepts is helpful, but not required, for these classes. Learners are not expected to have any prior experience working in data services.
This is a core/required course for the Level I Data Services Specialization.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
1. Use strategies for creating files that are findable and accessible for a research team.
2. Assess data dictionaries, codebooks, and similar files for comprehensive documentation.
3. Describe common methods for quality control in data collection and versioning.
4. Advise researchers on the storage and security of data during research.
5. Identify potential library data management services around data management and DMPs.
