This 12-week virtual student internship focuses on consumer health and digital literacy information, community programming, health statistics, and mapping software. At the end of the internship, students will have earned their Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Levels 1 & 2 from the Medical Library Association (MLA) having completed NNLM CHIS approved courses, attended weekly guest lecture talks on topics such as Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), Health and Digital Literacy, Consumer Health Information, and Health Statistics. They will apply their knowledge and skills in development of an ArcGIS StoryMap for the Community Guide to Advance Health Information and will present their project work as part of the NNLM Region 6 Speaker Spotlight webinar series.

The course requires a pre-approval selection for a limited number of students enrolled in an American Library Association (ALA) accredited library and information science degree program who have a strong interest in health information can apply. Enrollment varies.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this internship, students will:
- Recognize how social, economic, and environment determinants affect health outcomes for individuals and communities.
- Identify reliable information resources to help build capacity for understanding community health information needs.
- Have an increased understanding for how libraries and other community organizations are an important and trustworthy partner for advancing health literacy.
- Know how to engage with NNLM and MLA for continued health education training for professional development.
