NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy Workshop On-Demand

The NNLM Data Center for Data Services (NCDS) hosted an all-day workshop on February 17, 2023 to provide an extensive look at the NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan requirements that went into effect on January 25, 2023. The recordings from the workshop have been re-purposed for this on-demand class offered in Moodle. This workshop is intended for those without much experience working in research data management and will provide an overview of the NIH policy, research data management basics and related resources.

There are 5 modules, each with its own set of objectives:

  1. Policy Overview, Potential Library Roles, and Research Data Management Basics
    • Describe key features and requirements of the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy.
    • Identify potential library roles in working on policy compliance.
    • Understand basics of research data management work, including the research data lifecycle.
  2. Data Types, Tools, and Standards
    • Understand the meaning of the first three elements of an NIH data management and sharing plan: data types, related tools and software, and data standards.
  3. Data Preservation, Access, Distribution, and Oversight of Data Management and Sharing
    • Understand the final three elements of an NIH data management and sharing plan: preservation, access / distribution / reuse, and oversight.
  4. Data Interview and Additional Resources
    • Learn best practices for interviewing a researcher about data.
    • Discover supplemental resources for working with the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy.
  5. Activities
    • Assess your institution’s readiness for addressing the NIH DMSP.
    • Learn about common data repository requirements and limitations.
    • Gain experience analyzing a data management plan.

This course is an approved elective for the Level I Data Services Specialization.

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of the on-demand workshop, participants should be able to:

  1. Communicate the NIH DMSP policy in language that researchers, fellow librarians, or leadership at your institution will understand.
  2. Provide guidance for researchers on how to approach each section of a DMSP.
  3. Provide a general critique of a DMSP written by a researcher.
