MLA Reads Book Discussion: Algorithms of Oppression (2024)

MLA Reads is a virtual book club dedicated to exploring topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Since 2018, it has engaged over 350 librarians in discussions of books like Blindspot, The Person You Mean to Be, and Black Man in a White Coat, supported by approximately 50 facilitators. The club fosters thoughtful conversation in a safe and inclusive setting, leveraging virtual platforms like Zoom and WebEx to allow participation from anywhere.

Successful discussions rely on a well-organized planning team and dedicated facilitators who lead small group conversations. Facilitators benefit from co-leading discussions, as it helps share responsibilities and prevents cancellations. Training is essential, covering virtual facilitation mechanics, critical conversations, and DEI topics. Monthly check-ins further support facilitators by providing opportunities to exchange strategies and troubleshoot challenges. MLA Reads demonstrates how virtual book clubs can effectively foster engagement and professional networking while addressing important social issues.
