Explore the different types of health data standards and how they support interoperability of health information systems. Learn about relevant National Library of Medicine (NLM) terminology products, tools, and services. This course will help you identify ways that you may already be using standards and consider ways that you can adopt or better implement health data standards into your systems, workflows, and practices.

Expect to spend 2.5 hours learning through readings, videos, exercises, and quizzes in this on-demand, online class.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to: 

  • Explain the following concepts and their function within health IT systems:
    • The electronic health record (EHR)
    • Interoperability
    • Health data standards
  • Describe NLM’s roles and responsibilities related to health information standards
  • Define terminology standards
  • Provide an overview of some of the medical terminologies worked on by NLM
  • Describe general features of terminologies
  • Identify the role of Health Level Seven International (HL7) in the development of health data standards
  • Define the characteristics of each of the below standards that enable interoperability, and explain how the standard is used today:
    • Version 2 (V2)
    • Clinical Document Architecture (CDA)
    • Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)
  • Provide examples of how organizational interoperability is applied in health information systems
