LS5483 Patient & Consumer Health Information

Concepts and trends in consumer and patient health information services, including consumer health literacy, informatics, and e-health, with consideration of research on social determinants of health and health disparities.

Learning Objectives

This course is designed to provide an overview of consumer health information resources for use in educational and healthcare settings. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical roots of today’s health environment, particularly public health and consumerist events in the United States
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical responsibilities of librarians in supporting consumer health services
3. Identify, evaluate, select, and recommend health information resources for collections and in response to identified need
4. Demonstrate an understanding of concepts and issues in health information literacy and know how to identify and create materials suitable to low-literacy populations
5. Demonstrate familiarity with research in the area of consumer health information behavior and identify its application in medical librarianship
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of current awareness and professional life-long education methods in order to stay current in consumer health information service trends and research.

Agenda

Five separate Zoom sessions lasting up to four hours each are supported and enhanced by hands-on assignments and readings between sessions.
