Beyond Competence: Embracing Cultural Humility in Health Information Practice

Cultural humility is a concept that is within the constellation of humility concepts including: intellectual humility and political humility. In this webinar the presenter will describe the concept of cultural humility, differentiate this concept from the other types of humility, and contextualize how cultural humility as a concept differs from the more well recognized concept of cultural competence. Xan Goodman has over ten years of experience with teaching about the concept of cultural humility as an adjunct instructor and as an Associate Professor and Health Sciences Librarian.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define the differences between cultural humility and cultural competence.
  • Describe the differences between intellectual humility, political humility, and cultural humility.
  • Identify ways to implement cultural humility in your interactions with colleagues and patrons.

Xan Goodman is an Associate Professor and Health Sciences Librarian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) where she supports the School of Public Health, School of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and the School of Integrated Health Sciences. Xan is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) of the Medical Library Association and an American Library Association Spectrum Scholar. In 2024, Xan was inducted into the UNLV School of Public Health, Theta Chapter of Delta Omega, an International Public Health Honors Society. Since 2018, Xan has been teaching workshops on cultural humility and is the author of a three-pillar model of cultural humility for libraries In her spare time she enjoys making jewelry, tea brews, and homemade beauty products.
