Submitted by: Michelle Kraft, JMLA Co-lead Editor
The Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) is seeking applicants to join its editorial board for the 2026–2029 term. This is an opportunity to contribute to one of the leading journals in health sciences librarianship and help shape the future of scholarly communication in our field.
In line with our commitment to equity, we wish to use these positions to bring widespread perspectives and life experiences to our team. Individuals who identify as being from underrepresented groups within LIS publishing are strongly encouraged to apply.
The JMLA editorial board consists of individuals with varied personal identities, professional roles, workplaces, and geographies who advise on journal processes and policies, act as journal ambassadors, and help to keep the journal at the forefront of scholarly publishing.
The journal welcomes applicants from across the profession, including:
- Health sciences librarians
- Information professionals working in adjacent fields
- Healthcare workers, educators, and publishers
- Individuals with and without prior publishing experience
Whether you are experienced in scholarly research, writing, and/or publishing or do not yet have first-hand publishing experience but are looking to deepen your understanding of scholarly publishing, JMLA encourages you to apply.
What Editorial Board Members Do
Editorial board members play an active role in supporting the journal and advancing its mission. JMLA editorial board members also:
- Attend virtual editorial board meetings and communicate through the journal’s internal forum
- Represent the journal in professional spaces and solicit manuscript submissions from potential authors
- Can opt to join work groups dedicated to specific initiatives (e.g., developing new policies or programs)
- May serve as liaisons to other MLA groups
- May act as mentors to editorial interns or new peer reviewers or authors
- Are expected to stay up-to-date with new developments in scholarly publishing and to actively participate in editorial board conversations and training opportunities.
Members collaborate closely with journal leadership to ensure JMLA remains at the forefront of the field.
Terms and Benefits
Editorial board members serve three-year volunteer terms. Both MLA members and non-members are eligible to serve, and participation may qualify for Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) points.
