Bobby R. Carter passed away on April 7, 2026, surrounded by family. Bobby was a leader in the development of high-quality, professional medical libraries in Fort Worth and across the South-Central United States.

Bobby served as Director of the Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library at the University of North Texas Health Science Center from 1978 until his retirement in 2009. During his 31 years of leadership, he grew the library, expanded its services and technology, and established it as an information hub for the university. An active member of the MLA South Central Chapter, and the broader medical library community, Bobby also served for 25 years as Treasurer of the South Central Academic Medical Libraries (SCAMeL) consortium.

Bobby helped set the foundation for the work that happens today in medical libraries in Texas and the surrounding states. Friends and colleagues wishing to share their memories of Bobby may do so on his online memorial page at https://library.unthealth.edu/bobby-carter.html.
