Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders in Health Information

Submitted by: Nicki Mehall

Since 2010, the MLA Rising Stars Program has served as a launchpad for emerging leaders in the medical library community. Designed to nurture leadership potential, the program offers a year-long immersive experience that blends mentorship, strategic learning, and real-world application.

Help Shape the Future of Our Profession

The Rising Stars Program is a competitive leadership development initiative that matches selected Rising Stars with experienced mentors. Participants engage in monthly sessions led by MLA leaders, explore foundational leadership texts, and collaborate on a group project that addresses current MLA initiatives. The program culminates in a public presentation of their findings and recommendations.

Become a Successful Leader

The program is open to MLA members who have attended at least one national conference and have demonstrated commitment to professional service. Participants gain:

  • Mentorship and networking with seasoned professionals and peers
  • Leadership training through monthly virtual sessions
  • Insight into MLA governance and strategy
  • Hands-on experience via a collaborative project

Applications for the 2026–2027 cohort are open through November 15, 2025. Submit your application on MLANET.
