Pittsburgh Pierogi Tour

Submitted by: Alexa Silverman

If there’s only one thing you must know about the city of Pittsburgh when visiting for MLA ’25, it’s how much we love pierogis. Here are some personal recommendations for grabbing a delicious cheese and potato-filled bite before, after, or during the conference.

Main photo caption: And yes, that is the famous Pierogi Race that happens after the 5th inning of every Pittsburgh Pirates home game. Non-edible, sadly, but a great experience nonetheless.

Church Brew Works (6-12 min. drive from the David Lawrence Convention Center)

If you like an interesting setting with your pierogi, the Church Brew Works on Liberty Ave is the place to go. This Pittsburgh treasure offers delicious food and a unique history. Plus, you can see huge brewing machinery in a church’s sanctuary – how often can you say that? They also have DoorDash and Uber Eats options.

S&D Polish Deli (6 min. drive)

S&D Polish Deli is as traditional pierogi as they come. Plus, it’s a short walk to the Strip District, another cool neighborhood to check out while in town. They also have online ordering! Make sure to plan ahead, though: S&D closes at 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. on the conference days.

Apteka (15 min. drive)

Whether you are actively vegan, considering it, or just looking for an interesting alternative pierogi experience, Apteka is the place for you!

Butterjoint (~16 min. drive)

Oakland’s Butterjoint, located adjacent to the Pitt campus, is the perfect late-night spot for great pierogis. They do have a take-out option, but it’s pickup only.
