Packing for May in Milwaukee: A Weather Guide for Conference Attendees
Submitted by: Michele Matucheski, MLS, AHIP
As we count down the last days to the MLA conference in Milwaukee, May 19-22, 2026, you may be starting to think about packing for the trip. The question on everyone’s mind: what will the weather be like, and what should I wear?
As a long-time Wisconsin resident, I can tell you that May is a transition month, and the weather can be unpredictable. Lake Michigan water remains very cold, and the “‘lake effect” of winds coming off the lake can chill things downtown by 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. But don’t let that deter you! With a little planning, you’ll be perfectly prepared for a productive and comfortable conference.
Here’s the insider’s guide to dressing for Milwaukee in late May:
The Golden Rule: Layer Up!
If there’s one thing you need to know about spring in the upper Midwest, it’s that layers are your best friend. Days can start out cool and crisp, warm up to a delightful afternoon, and then turn chilly again when the sun goes down — or if you’re by the lake.
Expect average daily highs to be in the low-to-mid 60s Ft, with morning and evening temperatures potentially dipping into the 40s F. But, it could also be a sunny day in the 70s, or a gray, drizzly one. This variability is why layering is essential.
Pack for the forecast but know your comfort levels. I don’t put away my long-johns until AFTER Memorial Day, but other Wisconsites are comfortable wearing shorts in the snow!
Think in Threes:
- Base Layer: Light sweaters, long-sleeved blouses, t-shirts, and button-downs are perfect foundation pieces.
- Mid-Layer: A lightweight blazer, cardigan, denim jacket, or an unlined fleece provides crucial adaptability.
- Outer Layer: This is where you prepare for the elements.
The Forecast Calls for: Adaptability (and maybe Rain)
Along with the temperature swings, May is one of Milwaukee’s wetter months. Rain is likely during our conference dates.
Essential “Weather-Proofing” Items:
- Rain Jacket: A stylish, breathable, and waterproof outer layer is invaluable.Try apocket packable style, which these days can come in a range of lengths to suit your needs. A lightweight trench also looks great with conference attire and keeps you warm and dry on a walk to dinner.
- An Umbrella: A travel-sized umbrella is a small item witha big impacton a rainy commute.
- Water-Resistant Footwear: You’llbe doing a lot of walking—within the convention center, to hotels, and hopefully, to explore the city! Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are a must. Boots or water-resistant flats/loafers are ideal, especially if you plan to visit a place like the Milwaukee Art Museum on the lakefront.
Speaking of the lakefront, that’s where you’ll find the iconic Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM). You might have seen its breathtaking image—it’s a stunning building right on the shore, and it’s even more dramatic on a clear, breezy spring day.
