Candidate Questions from the Nominating Committee
How can we (MLA) as an organization provide the maximum value to our members and provide opportunities for involvement and relevance in these changing times?
As MLA navigates a rapidly changing environment, we can provide maximum value to our members by staying attentive to emerging trends and developing forward-looking programming that equips health sciences librarians for the future. At the same time, MLA must ensure that its resources, services, and professional development opportunities remain grounded in the core values of our profession, including equitable and transparent access to quality health information that supports evidence-based practice. By balancing innovation with these foundational principles, MLA can remain both relevant and trusted.
What would you, as a board member, do to help build community within our association and create an environment where members feel a sense of belonging?
As a board member, I would prioritize building community by actively listening to members and creating consistent opportunities for dialogue. Transparent communication is essential to ensuring that members feel informed, engaged, and connected to the association’s priorities. I would also advocate strongly for the value proposition of medical libraries, ensuring that our contributions to healthcare, education, and research are widely recognized. Most importantly, I would work to ensure that all voices are represented so that every member feels that MLA belongs to them and is truly their organization.
What one strategic initiative do you think would be most helpful for ensuring that MLA remains a vibrant and useful association?
One strategic initiative that would help ensure MLA remains vibrant and useful is positioning medical libraries and librarians as leaders in AI literacy. Whether enthusiastically embraced or approached with caution, artificial intelligence will undeniably shape our profession, careers, and institutions. MLA can play a critical role by advocating for librarians as experts in areas such as prompt engineering, the critical appraisal of AI-generated information, ethical considerations, and even the climate impacts of AI technologies. This focus would strengthen MLA’s relevance and highlight librarians as essential guides in an AI-driven future.
