Institution: Duke University, Durham, NC

Title: Administrative Research Librarian

Brief description of responsibilities

Annual statistics for the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), teach EndNote, National Institutes of Health (NIH) public access compliance reminders, and reference.

Why is MLA important to you?

Networking with colleagues, broadening my horizons, learning more about librarianship, seeing new places, and learning new ideas.

Why did you become a librarian?

Because it combined my love of science and books.

What was your first library job or first professional position?

I was a maternity leave replacement, and then my first full-time “real” job was as a circuit librarian for the Cleveland Health Sciences Library of Case Western Reserve University.

What is your advice to someone taking on a new role in leadership in MLA or in some other capacity?

Jump in with both feet, listen, and learn! There are so many people to help you when you start. They will show you the ropes. Just ask!

What has been the most interesting project you have worked on?

In terms of MLA, it would have to be when I was part of the Membership Committee (representing the Mid-Atlantic Chapter [MAC]/MLA). I worked to move the New Members/First-Time Attendees reception to become a breakfast so members wouldn’t go a whole day of the meeting without being welcomed.

Bucket list

Taking another trip to Alaska, taking the train across Canada, seeing Ireland and Scotland, going back to Hawaii and seeing other islands, and going to Australia and New Zealand.

What do you do in your spare time?

Read and counted cross-stitch.

What is the best thing you’ve read/watched/listened to recently?

The Shadow Riders series by Christine Feehan.

What are you most proud of?

My siblings, my nephews, and my niece.
