Peek Under the Hood of Your Website and Learn How to Unleash Its Power!

Submitted by Susanna Galbraith, Health Sciences Library, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada, and Andy Hickner, Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, Yale University, New Haven, CT

Your library or organization’s website is your most powerful way of publicizing and offering your services. Taking the Peeking Under the Hood course at MLA ’18 is a powerful way for you to advance the reputation of your library, become your library’s in-house expert on web matters, and enhance your resume.

If you are responsible for meeting the legal requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or if you maintain a website, edit web pages, gather web statistics, or must compete for limited information technology services, your users will thank you for taking this course!

You will learn how to make your LibGuides and other sites more user-friendly and ADA compliant; gain a basic understanding of how websites work and of concepts such as hosting, content management systems, hypertext markup language (HTML)/cascading style sheets (CSS), mobile-friendly design, and browser compatibility; learn how to use Google Analytics to collect actionable data on web traffic (e.g., which search terms that bring users to your site and which pages get viewed); and be able to talk confidently with technology staff.

Visit Peeking Under the Hood: Understanding, Assessing, and Improving Your Library’s Website and LibGuides to learn more and MLANET to register.

MLA continuing education courses are powerful and rewarding learning experiences! Of the participants who evaluated MLA ’17 courses, 97% found their courses engaging and would recommend them to colleagues. The percentage who rated themselves competent or better in their course area nearly tripled, from 22% to 59%.
