What Could You Do to Expand Access to Research in the Developing World?

In December, MLA announced the expansion of the Librarians without Borders (LWB) E-Library Training Initiative program. The new MLA HINARI/Research4Life Grant encourages health information professionals from around the world to work together to improve health outcomes through the power of information. Thanks to generous funding by the Elsevier Foundation, MLA will be able to offer grants for the next three years. These grants will help to develop a community of librarians that will continue to support HINARI/R4L training, including more trainers to impact more people.

The first round of grants will be awarded later this year, with additional grants in 2017 and 2018. Up to five grants will be awarded each year to individuals and/or organizations to conduct HINARI/Research4Life training activities. The grants will range from $1500-$6000.

By proposing a project, you can help empower others and facilitate publishing from emerging and low-income countries, as well as learn from your colleagues around the world. You could improve health information equality and access in developing countries by:

  • Conducting workshops either as a co-teacher with a current E-library Training Initiative coordinator or at an institution where the applicant/organization has ties or currently is employed
  • Organizing and teaching R4L distance learning courses
  • Organizing a regional U.S. based workshop for information specialists interested in HINARI/R4L activities and/or researchers, faculty or students from institutions that have linkages with R4L registered organizations.
  • Creating a new distance learning training module or course
  • Increasing mechanisms for promoting/marketing of HINARI & R4L programs and their training resources.
  • Developing measurement tools regarding outcomes of training activities.
  • Raising awareness among MLA members.

We look forward to the opportunity to further discuss the new MLA HINARI/Research4Life Grant during the open forum at Mosaic ’16 in Toronto. The on-line application form will be made available on MLANET in the next few weeks, with final applications due June 13, 2016. Proposals may come from either individuals or institutions, and applicants are not required to be members of MLA. View grant details on MLANET. Contact MLA’s grants coordinator with questions.
