RTI Research Spotlight: Health Literacy Workshops Support Employee Wellness Programming!

The latest issue of The Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA) showcases a 2022 RTI project, led by Colleen Foy, AHIP, a Research and Instruction Librarian for Health Science at the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, Wake Forest University. During her time in the RTI program, Colleen’s research studied the impacts of librarian-facilitated instruction in employee wellness programming through health literacy workshops. Workshops were developed based on health literacy frameworks. They included demonstrations of valid consumer health information sources like MedlinePlus and DailyMed and break-out sessions where participants analyzed social media posts containing health messaging. Pre- and post-workshop surveys aimed to collect participant attitudes and behaviors around health information seeking.

Colleen Foy, AHIP, is a 2022 Fellow and 2024 Peer Coach of the Research Training Institute (RTI). This study was the focus of her RTI research. The RTI project was possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (RE-246568-OLS-20).
