Raising and Communicating Your Strategic Value to Clinicians:

A Panel Discussion with and for Hospital Librarians

Sponsored by Wolters Kluwer

(Originally held November 7, 2022)

Webinar benefits:

A moderated panel of expert, practicing medical librarians will explore the challenges faced in communicating their intrinsic value to the institutions and organizations they serve.

The role of medical and hospital librarians is rapidly changing and evolving. At the same time, they are experiencing a revolution in how medical information is exchanged and distributed. Changes in scholarly communication, the digital transformation of medical journals, the movement to open science, and the rapid pace of experimentation and research have made it extremely difficult for physicians and clinicians to keep current with medical literature, especially at the point of care.

At the same time, the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and inordinate stress on the healthcare community has resulted in staffing cutbacks and constrained budgets for institutions and their medical library programs.

To preserve their essential role in managing the wealth and scope of medical information for hospitals and clinicians, medical librarians need to find ways to communicate and promote the strategic role they play as sponsors of evidence-based information and the support tools needed at the point of care.

Topics include:

  • Creating awareness of the key role medical librarians play in managing medical information, supporting research projects, and promoting the development of best practices and clinical studies
  • Demonstrating the economic value of medical librarians to the facilities and communities they serve
  • Disseminating reports on productivity gains, increased patient safety, and reduced variability in the quality of care
  • Showing how cost savings can derive from improved care quality, greater patient safety, improved compliance, and path to accreditation

MLA Panelists:

Jess L. Callaway, AHIP

Jess L. Callaway, AHIP, is the Clinical Research Librarian and Director of library services at Shepherd Center Hospital. A prior Vo+ER fellow, and current volunteer director with the Librarian Reserve Corps, Jess has built her career on using the library as a living organism to combat social determinants of health. She is the delegate for Information Services for the MLA Hospital Library Caucus. Over the last decade, Jess served in various educational capacities in emergency medicine and health literacy advocacy. Her research centers on voting engagement in healthcare, disinformation in medicine, and integrating librarianship into patient care.

Once, during her undergrad, she received a grade C on her Beowulf midterm with the comment “Too Outside the Box.” for stating that Grendel was the real victim of this story. She feels this gives you a good idea of who she is.
