Earlier today, August 25, 2022, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) released updated policy guidance on public access to Federally-funded research results. Among other provisions, the policy guidance calls for agencies to develop plans to remove the 12-month embargo on public access to publications resulting from Federally funded research. It also aims to ensure that data needed to reproduce the results presented in an article available at the time of publication.
Over the coming months, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) will work within NIH to develop NIH’s revised public access plan and implementation strategy. For the time being, the NIH Public Access Policy and submission procedures to PMC remain unchanged. PMC will continue to accept and provide public access to journal literature consistent with current NIH Public Access Policy requirements.
NLM supports public accountability and open science and stands ready to support the development and implementation of the updated policy guidance. NLM will also continue to work across the library, information science, and scholarly communications communities to develop innovative ways to support the updated policy and advance the effective stewardship of research data.
