Official Meeting Blogger: Evening Happy Hours and Socials

Although I'm more of a night owl, I didn’t make it out to as many evening events as I thought I would at MLA ‘19. However, I did attend the Northern California and Nevada Medical Library Group (NCNMLG) business meeting and happy hour at the Hyatt’s “The Living Room” on Monday evening. I’m fairly new to NCNMLG and hadn’t met any of the other members in person until now. I’m really glad I attended. Our group was pretty small, so I had the opportunity to chit chat with most everyone at some point in a relaxed setting. It was great getting to put faces to names I’ve only encountered in emails and to voices I’ve heard in Zoom meetings.

After dropping in on the Data and Systematic Review SIG meetings, I realized I could really benefit from communities like these. Since both sections and SIGs will become fee-free caucuses in the near future, there’s no reason not to participate. For future conferences, I plan  to pay closer attention to dine-around announcements and be bolder about asking colleagues to try out restaurants.
