The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library has the capacity to house millions of volumes in the underground storage system. Books are retrieved though a robotic crane system. Users request a book online, and then within five minutes the robotic crane retrieves the bin where the volume lives and delivers it to the ground floor for staff to pick up and delivers to the patron. The top level of the library is an elliptical glass dome reading room. The library was recognized with a Distinguished Building Citation of Merit by the American Institute of Architects’ Chicago chapter and a Patron of the Year Award by the Chicago Architecture Foundation.
