Take your research skills seriously: Learn about MLA's Research Training Institute

MLA’s Research Training Institute (RTI) Fellowship Program will transform you into a researcher able to independently conduct and lead a quality research project. The unique year-long virtual training covers all the stages of doing research, from developing a research question and designing and implementing a study to communicating a successful health information research project.

“Research is one of those things that gets pushed aside when other job stuff comes up,” notes Mark MacEachern, RTI Fellowship Program faculty co-lead. “The RTI Fellowship Program can help you devote more time to your research interests and become more marketable in this skill set.”

Since its inception five years ago, MLA’s RTI has helped dozens of librarians become more proficient in their research skills. “Every fellow I've spoken with feels so much more confident at the end of RTI than they were at the beginning,” notes Shanda Hunt, an RTI Fellowship Program instructor. “Two fellows in my cohort last year were offered jobs at the end of RTI, in part due to the RTI experience listed in their resumes.”

Margaret Hoogland, an RTI Fellow (class of 2018) and current peer coach, found that the RTI program helped her implement new ideas and raise her professional profile at her job. “The MLA-RTI gave me the confidence to experiment with doing different kinds of research,” she says.

The RTI application is open until February 28, 2023. See the RTI application page for more details. RTI Fellowship Program leaders and instructors will offer application drop-in sessions throughout the application period. Stay tuned for dates and times.

As Amelia Brunskill, an RTI Fellow (class of 2018) and current RTI peer coach says, “This is your opportunity to prioritize your development as a researcher and to execute a research study that might otherwise feel overly daunting or overly ambitious.”
