MLA Addresses Draft NIH Policy on Data Management and Sharing

The Medical Library Association (MLA) has submitted comments to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on proposed revisions to its draft data management and sharing policy for NIH funded or supported research. The feedback NIH receives will help inform the development of a draft NIH policy for data management and sharing, which is expected to be released for an additional public comment period upon its development.

MLA’s December 2018 comments were developed by members of the association’s Data Special Interest Group and Scholarly Communications Committee, and addressed issues related to

  • the definition of scientific data, specifically meta data and scientific data;
  • the requirements for data management and sharing policies in several areas such as sharing scientific data, plan review and evaluation, data types, standards, data preservation and access, and oversight of data management; and
  • compliance and enforcement

MLA thanks the following members for authoring these comments:  Erin Foster, Data SIG Co-convenor; Shirley Zhao, Scholarly Communications Committee Chair-designate; and MLA Data SIG members Antonio De Rosa, AHIP; Peace Ossom Williamson, AHIP; Melissa Ratajeski, AHIP; Ann Madhaven, and Sawyer Newman.
