The Science Caucus: Our Work, Partnerships, and Practices

February 18 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Are you curious about the vital role science librarians play in advancing and supporting basic science research? Join us for a panel webinar where we will approach this question from the perspective of three seasoned practitioners. Topics will include:
– Do Science librarians need a Science degree? – Laura Lipke, MS, MLIS, AHIP – Binghamton University.
We set out to discover whether librarians with a science background excelled over their non-science counterparts in successful liaison interactions—and the results were striking. Our research revealed a
notable gap in continuing education for science librarians, alongside a wealth of other unexpected findings!
– Tools for navigating the data interview – Nina Exner, PhD, MLS – Virginia Commonwealth University.
Nina will talk about their approach to the data sharing interview for science and translation PIs looking for data repositories.
– Establishing a bioinformatics service – Amy Yarnell, MA, MLS – University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Amy will discuss how she developed bioinformatics expertise through free educational resources, such as the NLM Bioinformatics and Biology Essentials for Librarians course. She will also highlight how
the library leveraged campus-wide connections and existing resources to sustain and expand their services.
