Developed by the section for the MLA Centennial in 1998. 

MLA's 1982 Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA
A group started to meet informally but proposed to meet annually with not more than twenty-five people to concentrate on a topic or two of common interest and have brief presentations by two or three members and then discussion by the group led by one member.

Collection Development Roundtable held at MLA's 1984 Annual Meeting in Denver, CO
A draft statement of purpose for the Collection Development Section was sent by John Patruno to Anne Pascarelli and Dan Richards for input and agreement.

A petition letter dated February 14, 1985, was sent by John Patruno to attendees of the Houston and Denver Collection Development Roundtables with an attached Statement of Purpose. The petition was signed by fourteen librarians from NYAM including Brett Kirkpatrick and Anne Pascarelli.

A letter from John Patruno dated March, 10, 1985, was sent to Mark Funk then chair of MLA's Section Eligibility Committee with twenty-nine petition forms enclosed including 124 MLA member signature.

A justification for the establishment of a collection development section dated March 1985 (creator unknown ~ possibly J.P.) was written.

"In accordance with the purposes and goals of the MLA, the Collection Development Section shall:

  1. provide a forum communication and cooperation among health sciences librarians charged with responsibility for selection, retention, and deselection of library materials;
  2. promote the education of health sciences librarians in general, and those responsible for collection development in particular, in matters relating to the philosophy, design, conduct and evaluation of collection development programs;
  3. provide a resource group among the membership of MLA which will be available to coordinate, propose, support or study, along or in conjunction with other related bodies, issues and practices relevant to the development of library collections in health sciences institutions."

Membership dues were $5 in 1986

As of October 28, 1986, when Dan Richards prepared the Midwinter Progress Report, the section had more than fifty members

Creation of the "Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Collection Development in the Health Sciences" was established in 1986 by Ballen Booksellers International, Inc. The award includes a medal engraved with the name of the recipient and the date of the award, a cash prize presented at the annual meeting and honorary status at a luncheon sponsored by the section held at the annual meeting.

  • Draft Bylaws changes were proposed on the following issues: the role of officers, participation in MLA's centralized dues collection program, clarifying the term of the Secretary-Treasurer, recognizing the responsibilities of the outgoing Section Chair, conforming the fiscal year with MLA, acknowledging the newsletter committee, the amending of bylaws. A response from the membership is due by July 30th.

  • David Morse created an electronic newsletter on biomedical library acquisitions titled "Biomedical Library Acquisitions Bulletin" orBLAB for short. The first issue was e-mailed to subscribers on April 15, 1992, and 100 people had signed up by the MLA meeting in May.

  • MLA published DocKit #3: Collection Development Policies for Health Sciences Libraries, edited by David Morse and Dan Richards. The DocKit contains excerpts from 30 health sciences libraries' collection policy statements.

  • Anne Prussing will chair a committee to plan for the Third Collection Development Symposium to be held in 2001. Other members are Jett McCann, B.J. Schorre, Frances Chen and Lynne Fortney.
  • Connie Poole is organizing the historical files of the section for the MLA Centennial
  • The section Web site moved to a new URL.
  • David Morse is looking for someone to take over as editor of BLAB
  • Linda Hulbert is working on a section award to honor Dan Richards
  • A summary report on the Second MLA Symposium on Collection Development in Health Sciences Libraries was published in the Spring 1997 issue of Developments (Vol. 9, no. 2).
  • The MLA Board of Directors established a Cookbook Project to honor Dan Richards. MLA members are encouraged to submit recipes and publication is expected in time for MLA's Centennial in 1998.
  • Cheryl Warren is stepping down as editor of Developments.
  • The Section Council Alternate position has been eliminated. The representative-elect model was adopted to take effect in 1999. An elected section member will serve in the "elect" capacity for a year and then become representative for two years.
