Thank you: An update on abstract submissions for MLA | SLA ‘23

The MLA | SLA ’23 National Planning Committee is very excited by the high number of abstracts that were submitted to both content categories that were traditionally MLA and SLA. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for this.

It’s exciting to see that so many colleagues have embraced the opportunity to share their hard work and unique challenges with us. It means we’ll have a meeting that truly helps broaden our understanding of the information profession. And as my colleagues and SLA members Nabi Hasan and Andy Shimp, both serving on the NPC, have said, “We’re looking forward to fresh thinking, new insights, and unique perspectives that [our] partnership is sure to provide.” There will be excellent content for everyone at MLA | SLA ’23.

As a reminder, there are two rounds of submissions: this gives authors the opportunity to receive feedback from reviewers and consider revising and resubmitting their proposals for Round 2. Round 1 for submissions accepted papers for program descriptions and research abstracts, contributed papers, immersion sessions and education sessions. Round 1 closed on October 31, 2022.

Here is how the submission numbers tallied up:

MLA | SLA ’23 Round 1 Submissions Update

Immersion sessions: 22

Research papers: 56

Program description papers: 71

Contributed papers: 13

Education sessions: 53

Total submissions: 215

MLA and SLA abstract reviewers have undergone training and are reviewing the submissions. (We’ll describe the training and the process in more detail in a future blog post.) Acceptance notices will be distributed December 6, 2022.

We encourage you to consider the reviewer feedback and think about revising your abstract for the Round 2 submissions, which open December 15, 2022, and are open until January 26, 2023. Round 2 submissions cover Lightning Talk and Poster sessions (NOTE: all Lightning Talks will be held during virtual sessions ONLY in 2023).

Thank you again for your thoughtful submissions. The topics are a good representation of issues that advance the profession of information science and librarianship in thoughtful ways. I am excited to see these presentations!
