The Business of Libraries
Tuesday, March 8–Tuesday, April 19

Whether you’re already in a management role or aspiring to be, The Business of Libraries provides you with the tools and practices you need to support day-to-day management activities. Designed for health librarians and library technicians, this six-session course covers key management principles and concepts and introduces you to strategic planning, marketing, talent and vendor management, as well as budgeting.
 
This course consists of five self-directed sessions launching weekly starting March 8th, 2022. It then wraps up with a live interactive session with the course instructor, Lori Anne Oja, on April 19 at 1:00 p.m., eastern time, and a quiz.
 
By the end of this course, you will be able to

  • Develop a strategic plan
  • Outline key steps in developing a marketing plan
  • Understand the basics of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting
  • Improve negotiation knowledge to generate better outcomes
  • Understand the talent management cycle including acquiring, retaining, and developing employees

When/Where: The Business of Libraries will be offered via PheedLoop.
 
This course consists of five pre-recorded (asynchronous) sessions that include cues to pause the video and work through tasks. A message board function lets you discuss the sessions with other participants. Sessions will be launched weekly.

  1. Module 1: Strategy, launching March 8, 2022
  2. Module 2: Marketing, launching March 15, 2022
  3. Module 3: Talent Management, launching March 22, 2022
  4. Module 4: Vendor Management, launching March 29, 2022
  5. Module 5: Budget, launching April 5, 2022

The sixth and final session is a synchronous session with the course instructor, Lori Anne Oja, on April 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., eastern time. During this session, you will have a chance to ask questions and discuss the hands-on parts of the asynchronous sessions.
 
The course will then wrap up with a quiz to be completed before certificates of completion are handed out.

Course Instructor

Lori Anne Oja has an MLIS from the University of Western Ontario, an MBA from the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto), as well as a non-profit management certificate from the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. Her education complements her 25+ years of experience in libraries, including 15 years in a senior management role.
 
Approved for 6 CEU credit hours (MLA recognizes CHLA/ABSC CE approved courses as being equivalent to MLA CE credits).
