Something’s Brewing in Atlanta

Thanks to a change in state legislation allowing craft beer breweries to sell beer and food directly to the consumer that went into effect September 1st 2017, the Atlanta area is currently experiencing a craft beer boom. Before this legislation, Georgia was the last state to not allow breweries to sell beer directly to consumers. Due to the changes in this law, the brewery experience in Atlanta is ever changing. None are within walking distance of the Hyatt Regency, but if you have time, they are worth checking out.  Atlanta area breweries to consider include the following:

Monday Night Brewing:

Beers to try:

  • Han Brolo: a hazy pale ale
  • Fu Man Bru: a Belgian Wit
  • Drafty Kilt: Scotch Ale

Orpheus Brewing:

Beers to try:

  • Atalanta: Tart Plum Saison
  • Transmigration of Souls: double IPA
  • Several brewery-only sours: changing lineup

New Realm Brewing: Opening in January 2018, this will be the first brewery built to take advantage of the changes in the law. It will have a brewery and a full service restaurant.  Mitch Steele, the longtime Brewmaster from Stone Brewing, is the Co-founder and Brewmaster.  Expect classic West Coast IPAs, pilsners and other classic craft beer styles.

Three Taverns: (Decatur, Ga)

Beers to try

  • A Night on Ponce IPA: several brewery-only ipas and sours.

Sweetwater Brewing: Known for classic beers such as 420 Pale Ale, Sweetwater has a new “Sour and Barrel Aging” location called the Woodlands that is receiving rave reviews.

The above breweries are just a handful available in the Atlanta area.  For a more extensive listing of Atlanta breweries, check out the “Atlanta Craft Brewery Guide.”
