Scholarly Communications Slide Decks

The Medical Library Association’s Scholarly Communications Committee has gathered slide decks on the following scholarly communications topics prepared by health sciences librarians during the last 3 years including:

  • Why publishing open access?
  • Demystifying Citation Metrics
  • Research by the Numbers: Using Citation-Based Impact Metrics and Tools
  • Altmetrics: Real-Time Measurement of Your Scholarly Impact

This project is intended to assist early career librarians in developing their own quality presentations on topics of interest to their stakeholders. The slide decks include contextual information such as the original presentation date, the topics covered by the presentation, and the Creative Commons license for the work.

The Committee thanks everyone who shared their slide deck presentations. We selected four slide decks based on several criteria, including the clarity and quality of their content, the appropriate and appealing use of graphics and media, and the use of quality sources for underlying information.

Do you have a slide deck that you are willing to share to support our continued effort? If you do, please send the original file or a link to your slides, if they are in a repository or slide-sharing website, to Karen Gutzman. The Scholarly Communications Committee will review all shared slides and select slide decks to share on the website.

Scholarly communications topics presentations may cover include:

  • evaluating journals
  • measuring impact and visibility
  • copyright
  • fair use
  • authors’ rights
  • open access publishing
  • ORCID
  • public access policies and funder mandates
  • research data management
  • peer review

MLA thanks Karen Gutzman, Chair-designate and Lilian Hoffecker, Past Chair of MLA's Scholarly Communications Committee for their work on this newly established initiative.
