Title: Consumer Health Librarian

Brief description of responsibilities:

I assist patients, families/caregivers, medical professionals, and community members locate credible resources and research in all areas of patient health care. My goal each day is to equip patients and family caregivers with credible and timely health information presented in their native language as well as in a learning style that best suits each one. This is accomplished through in-person and virtual health education sessions and presentations. I am a health literacy advocate promoting the medical informational needs within our patient, family/caregiver and community populations. I assist in improving the health and quality of life for each patient, family caregiver, health care professional, and community member I serve.

Why is MLA important to you?

MLA has been an amazing way to network with fellow medical librarians and grow as a professional through education and training.

Why did you become a librarian?

I wanted to continue to be a teacher but focus on the power of a book in the hands of a child.

What was your first library job or first professional position?

In a small elementary school where I served as the media coordinator for 1,200 K–5 students.

What is your advice to someone taking on a new role in leadership in MLA or in some other capacity?

To see it as a challenge and a new opportunity to grow as a professional and as a person.

What has been the most interesting project you have worked on?

A webinar series collaboration I did with pediatrician Dr. Negron on three taboo topics associated with the patients she serves. The title is “Not My Child” and includes adolescent/teen addiction to pornography, the dangers of cell phones, and also vaping.

What do you consider to be the most pressing issues or trends in librarianship?

Better educating clinicians and the public on the importance of patient health literacy. When patients understand their health, they will experience improved health and quality of life.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy visiting resorts and restaurants.

What is the best thing you’ve read/watched/listened to recently?

A podcast sermon series by Dr. Tony Evans on the name of Jesus.

Inquisitive, creative, solver, compassionate, and dedicated.

Is there anything about you that others might be surprised to know?

I am a Disney World fanatic.

What are you most proud of?

The life with my family that God has blessed me with.
