From CHLA/ABSC to MLA: Time to Start Scheduling!

It’s hard to believe that Mosaic ’16 starts in a few short days! An enormous amount of work by an enormous number of people continues to be done to make this joint conference happen.

I am excited to be one of the official bloggers and am responsible for posts related to CHLA/ABSC activities. As you can already see from the program (or programme, if you’re aiming to go all Canadian on everyone) CHLA/ABSC is interspersed all over the place from the First Timers Reception to the Chapter President’s Roundtable to the AGM to the IGs not to mention the CE, paper, and poster presenters. Clearly, too much for one mere blog post. Sound overwhelming? Well, it is. So let’s see what we can do to make it a little easier.

For those of you who are regulars at the CHLA/ABSC conference and who have never attended the impressive beast that is the MLA Annual Meeting, you are in for a treat. A ginormous, motivating, provocative, exhausting treat. Get yourself in the mindset now that you will not be able to see it all even though everything looks interesting and not-to-be-missed. Think of it like a dessert buffet: you want to taste everything but you know that it’s not possible, so you select your favourites (or favorites, if you’re aiming to go all American on everyone), fill yourself up, and make a note to look up a few recipes later.

Unlike a dessert buffet where you don’t always get to plan in advance, MLA has an excellent scheduling app that allows you to map out your conference experience. I strongly suggest that you download the app and use it to plan your days. It’s super simple to use and will save you mountains of time and paper-flipping later. And if that wasn’t enough, you can also browse and highlight paper presenters, posters, and exhibitors and link to various twitter feeds and blogs.

More info on the conference app, including a handy text-the-app-to-your-phone feature, can be found here.

Oh, and one more tip: wear comfortable shoes. Save your fancy shoes for the banquet. Your feet will thank you.
