Highlighting the MLA'17 theme: Dream, Dare, Do are our featured speakers:

Sunday, May 28th, 10:30 - 11:55 am

John P McGovern Award Lecturer:

Julie Angus

Julie Angus rowed from Lisbon to Costa Rica with the man that she later married, Colin. They faced the 100 miles-per-hour winds and 40-foot-high waves of Hurricane Vince. They spelled each other rowing—hour after hour after hour after hour, day after day after day, finally completing the 10,000 kilometer journey in 5 months. Angus was the first woman to row across the Atlantic from mainland to mainland and was named Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic in 2006 (an honor she shared with Colin). But she didn’t set out to be an adventurer, Julie holds an undergraduate degree from McMaster University, with honors in biology and psychology. She completed her master of science degree at the University of Victoria, specializing in molecular biology and spent nearly a decade working as a scientist.

Closing Keynote Speaker:

Hope Jahren

As a child and a young woman, Hope played and then worked in her father’s lab and dreamed of herself as a scientist. As a student and a young woman, she dared to explore her chosen research areas and to trust her laboratory partner. As she learned to do her science, she overcame the obstacles that all young scientists face (particularly young women) and developed her reputation as an excellent scientist. She has taken that work a step further and created a bestselling book, Lab Girl, which describes her journey from that childhood to her current areas of interest and expertise.
