An experience at Bracken Health Science Library - third week

It’s the third week I have been here. I got more time to talk with Bracken’s librarians one-on-one during this week.

Sarah, a librarian of Bracken, introduced me to the Bachelor of Health Sciences online program of Queen’s University. Students who are interested in health sciences can apply for the course and earn a formal degree after getting enough credits. Sarah spends a lot of time working with faculty to help them to finish their online courses. It is very different that students in Canada are required to get an undergraduate degree before entering school of medicine (4-year degree), but high school students in Taiwan can get into school of medicine (6 or 7-year degree) directly according to their scores of entrance exam.

Laurie, another librarian in Bracken, talked with me about their outreach services. Bracken has three outreach partners (hospitals) now. These partners don’t have their own library, so they cooperate with Bracken. Bracken offers book borrowing, search training, orientations, website maintenance and acts on behalf of outreach partners to get access licenses of journals and databases from vendors.

In addition, I did a presentation in Bracken to introduce the NTU medical library and some facts about Taiwan and Taipei City. It’s a wonderful experience to share not only working experiences but also culture and life style with Bracken librarians.

I visited the Engineering and Science Library on Thursday. It’s located at Douglas Library of Queen’s University in a historic building. A librarian introduced me to the history of Douglas Library and gave me a tour of the whole library. The most impressive space is the Harry Potter room. It’s a very beautiful reading room on the top floor of Douglas and similar to classrooms in Hogwarts. An interesting visit!
