Every year since 2016 and every other year since 2010, four MLA members have hitched their star to the MLA Rising Stars Leadership Program. If you aspire to a leadership role in MLA and you want to develop your leadership skills and knowledge, we encourage you to apply to become one of the four ‘25-’26 Rising Stars! Past Stars have become MLA board members and assumed other MLA leadership roles.

What Does the Rising Star Program Offer?
The MLA Rising Star Program is more than just a series of classes; it’s an immersive experience that pairs you with seasoned mentors and equips you with the tools to excel. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Mentorship and Guidance
You’ll be matched with a mentor who will guide you throughout the program. This relationship is invaluable for gaining insights, navigating challenges, and planning your professional trajectory.
2. Leadership Development
Engage in monthly classes led by MLA member leaders, where you’ll develop awareness of your leadership skills and dispositions. These sessions provide a supportive environment for you to reflect on your personal growth and understand the dynamics of effective leadership.
3. Intellectual Engagement
Dive into classic leadership texts and contemporary issues within the field. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss, reflect upon, and apply these concepts, enhancing your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
4. Comprehensive Insight into MLA
Gain a deep understanding of the MLA’s structure, history, and strategic planning through a variety of experiences, including observing a Board.
5. Group Projects and Real-World Applications
Collaborate with your peers on a group project that addresses current MLA initiatives. This hands-on experience will not only enhance your teamwork skills but also make a tangible impact on the organization.
Who Should Apply?
The Rising Star Program is open to all young professionals who are passionate about medical librarianship. Here are the criteria:
- You do not need to be an MLA member when applying, but if selected, you must obtain membership for the duration of the program (two membership cycles)
- You must have attended at least one national MLA annual conference (in-person or virtual)
- A demonstrated commitment to professional service through participation in relevant activities or conferences is essential
- Current and past members of the MLA Board of Directors are not qualified to apply
