The I’s Have It: MLA ’25 Janet Doe Lecture by Jean Shipman

We are excited to have Jean P. Shipman, MSLS, AHIP, FMLA, deliver the Janet Doe Lecture at MLA ’25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jean has had an extensive career and made many contributions, and we’re honored to have her share her insights and experiences with us.
Jean is currently retired, but she continues to contribute to the field as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah’s School of Medicine. She also serves on the Board of Directors for variety of organizations, including Friends of the National Library of Medicine, Rockfish Valley Community Center, and Rockfish Gallery and Gifts.
Her most recent position was as the Vice President of Global Library Relations for Elsevier. Prior to that, she held several key roles at the University of Utah, including Executive Director of Knowledge Management at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, Director of the MidContinental Region and National Training Office of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, and Director for Information Transfer at the Center of Medical Innovation. Jean’s career has also included positions at prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, University of Maryland, University of Washington, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
She served as president of the Medical Library Association in 2006-2007.
She also served on the Board of Directors for the Society for Scholarly Publishing from 2013 to 2016 and as cochair of the Chicago Collaborative. She’s the coeditor of two books:

- Strategic Collaborations in Health Sciences Libraries
