Medical Library Association Statement on the Dismissal of Dr. Carla Hayden
Submitted by: Heather Holmes, MLA President
The Medical Library Association (MLA) expresses its profound disappointment and concern regarding the recent dismissal of Dr. Carla Hayden as the 14th Librarian of Congress. Dr. Hayden’s tenure was marked by her unwavering commitment to democratizing access to information, modernizing library systems, and championing inclusivity within one of our nation’s most esteemed institutions.
As the first woman and first African American to hold this prestigious position, Dr. Hayden broke historical barriers and set a precedent for leadership rooted in equity and service. Her efforts to expand digital access, preserve cultural heritage, and engage diverse communities have left an indelible mark on the Library of Congress and the broader library profession.
Dr. Hayden’s abrupt termination not only undermines the progress achieved under her leadership but also raises concerns about the politicization of roles that have traditionally remained above partisan influence. The Library of Congress serves as a cornerstone for research, education, and the preservation of our collective history, including oversight of the Congressional Research Service (CRS). The CRS is a non-partisan and confidential research service for members of congress. Ensuring its leadership remains committed to these nonpartisan values is paramount.
MLA stands in solidarity with our colleagues at the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, and other organizations that have voiced their support for Dr. Hayden and condemned her dismissal. We echo the sentiments expressed by ALA President Cindy Hohl, who highlighted Dr. Hayden’s role as a “wise and faithful steward” of the Library of Congress.
In these times, when access to accurate information and the preservation of knowledge are more critical than ever, leadership that embodies integrity, inclusivity, and dedication to public service is essential. Dr. Hayden exemplified these qualities, and her contributions will continue to inspire future generations of librarians and information professionals.
