In Memoriam: Mohamed Farouk Hussain, 1955-2024
Former Interim Director of the Medical Research Library of Brooklyn, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Mohamed F. Hussain, MSLIS, passed away August 8, 2024, on his 69th birthday. Born in British Guiana (Guyana) August 8, 1955, Mr. Hussain’s early career was as a teacher and educator In Guyana after his graduation with a BA in English and Dramatic Arts from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
In 1990, Mr. Hussain began his library career as a Library Aide a the Medical Research Library of Brooklyn; talent and dedication led to him being appointed in 2000 as Assistant Director for Resource Management and Collection Development Manager. In 2018 his role changed to Interim Director of the Medical Research Library.
A graduate of the Pratt Institute, Mr. Hussain was a member of the Medical Library Association (MLA), the New York/New Jersey Chapter of MLA, the State University of New York Library Association (SUNYLA), and American Society of Information Science (now the Association for Information Science and Technology, ASIS&T).
Describing himself as an “accidental librarian” in this YouTube video, Mr. Hussain’s dedication, leadership, and desire to make a difference will be sorely missed by his colleagues.
