MLANET Editor Position Description
The MLANET editor is an appointed official of the association
and serves at the pleasure of the Board
of Directors. The appointee must be a member of the association with
the experience and background necessary to oversee this important communication
vehicle.
Specific Responsiblities
- The editor ensures that MLANET editorial policies
are consistent with the association's strategic
plan and priorities, as well as the direction of its publishing
program.
- The editor works with the director
of research and information systems and the director of publications
to ensure that the MLANET
Policy and Procedure Manual and style
guide are up-to-date.
- The editor works with the board and staff liaisons
to annually identify volunteers for the the MLANET
Editorial Board (MEB) or others required to facilitate the development
of member-content areas of MLANET. The editor coordinates the work of
associate editors and provides them with guidance, support, and assistance.
- The editor works with staff liaisons to identify
(based on survey data, Website statistics, usability studies, and other
aggregated information) enhancements to content and functionality of
MLANET.
- The editor works with the MEB, staff, and other editors to establish best practices,
interpret membership comments and suggestions, and encourge open lines
of communication between relevant association units involved with MLANET projects.
- With the MEB, the editor evaluates, edits, and organizes
copy submitted by members for the CORE Toolkit and other
member-content areas of MLANET.
- The editor prepares midwinter and annual
reports about MLANET and activities of the MEB.
- The editor responds promptly to inquiries, suggestions,
and complaints about MLANET policy and procedures.
Selection Criteria
Each individual who expresses interest in the position
will be required to submit a current curriculum vitae, evidence of relevant
experience, a letter than includes a written statement regarding potential
contributions and projected goals for MLANET, and the names and contact
information of three references that can address your qualifications for
the editor position.
The search committee will evaluate candidates using the
following criteria:
- Editorial experience
- Familiarity with Web technology and metadata
- Knowledge of Web standards and best practices
- Interest and involvement in health sciences librarianship
- Understanding of and ability to devote the appropriate
amount of time to the editor role
- Assurance by the candidate's institution to provide
support for the project throughout the term
- Other attributes that are desirable:
- understanding of MLA's goals, business plan, and
organizational structure
- tact, self-confidence, and a cooperative attitude
when dealing with a diverse group of people
- ability to be fair-minded and not limited by either
personal, institutional, or regional loyalties or biases
- ability to set up and adhere to a complex schedule
of deadlines
- skill and patience in doing detailed work
- initiative to cultivate sources of information and
solicit content
