Section Descriptions
Each section's founding date, purpose, and dues are listed below. MLA members may join additional sections by using the Membership Application Form.
Established 1981
This section provides a forum for cooperation and communication among
librarians having a special interest in cancer-related libraries or information
services and promotes the continued development of cancer libraries and
cancer information resources and services. ($10.00)

Established 1986
This section provides a forum for communication
and cooperation among health sciences librarians charged with responsibility
for selection, retention, and deselection of library materials; promotes
the education of health sciences librarians in general and those responsible
for collection development in particular in matters relating to the philosophy,
design, conduct, and evaluation of collection development programs; and
provides a resource group among the MLA membership that will be available
to coordinate, propose, support, or study, alone or in conjunction with
other related bodies, issues relevant to the development of library collections
and practices in health sciences institutions. ($10.00)

Established 1984
This section provides a forum for health sciences
librarians in the area of consumer and patient health information by encouraging
the formation of guidelines for the provision of consumer and patient
health information, promoting the education of health sciences librarians
in the provision of such information, and providing a program on consumer
and patient health information at the association's annual meeting. ($15.00)

Established 2000
This section provides a forum for health sciences
librarians working in the corporate environment, a place within MLA for
corporate information services and for sharing the corporate perspective
with all MLA members, The section also offers a global focus to MLA, as
many of the companies have branches in other countries. ($15.00)

Established 1933
This section provides activities and programs that
promote, advance, and facilitate communication among persons with interests
in dental medicine and oral biology and contributes to the management
of dental collections. ($10.00)

Established 1973 as Health Sciences Audiovisual Section
This section, organized to support and further the applications of nonprint
media within the health sciences, is a meeting ground for librarians,
information scientists, and others interested in nonprint media for the
health sciences. ($15.00)

Established 1976 as Military Medical Libraries Section
This section improves library services through increased communication
and cooperation among U.S. government libraries. ($12.00)

Established 1952 as Medical Society Libraries Section; name changed in 2001 to Health Association Libraries Section
This section represents within the association the interests of the librarians,
staff, and clients of health association libraries and serves as a forum
for the interchange of ideas among medical society librarians. ($10.00)

Established 1966
This section stimulates interest in the history of health sciences libraries,
strengthens communication and cooperation among history-of-health- sciences
libraries and librarians, and provides opportunities for the professional
development of MLA members. ($10.00)

Established 1948
This section promotes the interests of and acts upon the concerns of hospital
libraries and librarians; seeks to establish itself as the center for
hospital library communication and cooperate with health care organizations
and accrediting agencies; supports the concept of librarianship as a profession;
seeks to improve hospital library service through research, cooperative
efforts, and expanded facilities; and assists in the development of appropriate
programs in continuing education for hospital librarians. ($20.00)

Established 1989
This section provides opportunities for participation in international
cooperation projects, promotes awareness of international issues, provides
a mechanism for addressing and responding to the needs of international
members, and fosters communication in the international library area.

Established 1948 as Medical School Libraries Section; name changed in 2000 to Leadership and Management Section
This section's purpose is to focus on the art and the science of
leadership and management, promoting research and advancing professional
development in these areas. The intent is to be very inclusive. Librarians
at all levels and in all types of libraries are called upon to exercise
leadership skills and to deal with management issues. ($10.00)
