Module 3: PubMed and NLM Gateway

What is the NLM Gateway and Why Would I Want to Use It?

NLM Gateway is another search engine that allows you to search MEDLINE, however, it also permits you to search several other NLM databases at the same time, including LOCATORplus (NLM's catalog of book, journal, and audiovisual holdings, the largest collection of health-related mateials in the world), and MedlinePlus (NLM's database of consumer health related materials). For a complete list of the contents of the NLM Gateway, visit http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd?Overview.x#system (new window).

How Do I search the NLM Gateway?

Searching the NLM Gateway is very similar to searching PubMed, though you will find that it is a much simpler search engine. You may still search by textword or by subject heading. You may also select "LIMITS" to narrow your search (though your choices in this search engine are much smaller). Since the Gateway is searching a number of very different databases at the same time, your search will have to be a simpler one. Your results will also show up in a different manner.

Select the following link: http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd?GMBasicSearch (new window) and again enter the word "Viagra." Then hit "SEARCH". Notice that you can select from a listing of Journal Articles, Books/Serials/AVs, Consumer Health, Meeting Abstracts, and Other Collections. Looking at the Book/Serials/AVs line, click DISPLAY RESULTS. You will see a list of items from LOCATORplus on the subject.

Exercises:
  1. Using the MeSH Database and limits in PubMed, find articles on the use of Cipro in the treatment of anthrax.
  2. Using textword searching, find the article on the life expectancy of Academy Award winners.
