The Research Imperative
One of MLA’s professional competency areas needed by health sciences librarians is the ability to understand scientific research methods and to critically examine and filter research literature from many related disciplines including:
- using quantitative and qualitative methodologies and techniques and their interpretation
- locating, organizing, and critically evaluating the research literature
- using principles of evidence-based practice to support decision making
- conducting research and reporting and disseminating research findings either individually or in interdisciplinary research teams
The Research Policy Statement of the Medical Library Association
In The Research Imperative (2007), MLA reaffirms its commitment to assure the vital presence and continued growth of both individuals and the profession of information research.
The Research Imperative challenges MLA to advance a culture where “analysis and application of a health information research knowledgebase” is commonplace—where health information practitioners, just like their health care practitioner colleagues, use the best available evidence when making a decision.
